How to recycle your gently used clothing and shoes
By donating it to The Salvation Army clothing donation program, you can GET A TAX DEDUCTION FOR CLOTHES and SHOES YOU NO LONGER NEED OR DON'T FIT ANYMORE.
Clothes are needed by many including all the homeless families in the United States. Many children living in low-income conditions could benefit from your donation of gently used clothes.
As you may or may not know, donating your clothes to The Salvation Army qualifies as atax deductible gift. For tax deduction purposes, The Salvation Army publishes guidelines for the valuation of donated items, including clothing and shoes.
When donating your used clothes consider what we currently need including: school clothes, ties, blouses, dresses, jacket, belts, coats and other cold-weather accessories, professional clothing for employment interviews, and shoes.
Clothing can be folded and packed in sturdy boxes or bags. Donated clothes should be clean, undamaged, and reasonably wrinkle-free. Items that come in pairs (shoes, gloves, socks) should be kept together (shoe laces can be tied together, gloves and socks can be stuffed inside each other).
The Salvation Army will pick up clothing, shoes, and household items from most locations in the United States. If you don't have a lot of items, you may want to ask friends, neighbors, and coworkers if they would like to make a clothing and shoe donation as well. The Salvation Army also have drop-off locations for your clothing donations and other items.
Your clothing donation can make a big difference in the lives of children and adults in need. For tax purposes, you should keep a list of the clothes you donate. The Salvation Army will provide you a donation tax receipt. To find out the value of the clothes you are donating please visit our donation valuation guide.

Clothing & Textile Recycling
Did you know that 5.7% of NYC's residential waste is textiles. Recycle unwanted textile materials by donating them to The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army encourages you to donate wisely.
Not all organizations that collect clothing donations make the best use of them. Some thrift stores solicit donations under the name of a charity, but as little as 5 percent of the money generated from these donations may actually go to the charity. At The Salvation Army, 83 percent of our revenues are used to fund our adult rehabilitation programs. The Salvation Army is consistently ranked among top charities that make your donations go further. So when ready to donate your clothes think of The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army tackles the landfills problem right in your community by recycling and reusing the clothes. We collect the used clothing, keep it out of the landfills and thus help towns and municipalities to save money and resources.
The clothes are resold to raise funds for development projects such as schools, health programs or HIV/AIDS prevention in Africa, Asia and Central America.
